History
The beginning of the regional tournament was the lifting of the ban on South Africa from participating in international football life and holding the African Cup of Nations in 1996 in the Republic of South Africa . Immediately after this event in 1997, the first KOSAFA Cup was organized and held, the main sponsor of which was the South African brewery Castle Lager . Hence the official name of the 11 tournaments held out of 15 - COSAFA Castle Cup . In 2007, Castle beer company stopped its sponsorship, and in 2008 the tournament was held under the name COSAFA Senior Challenge Cup . Over the nearly 20-year history of the COSAF Cup, 5 teams became its winners - Zambia , Angola , Zimbabwe , South Africa and Namibia . Until 2009, victories between the national teams of Zambia , Angola , Zimbabwe and South Africa were evenly distributed - three for each of the teams. In 2009, the Zimbabwe team won the tournament for the fourth time, and in 2013 the Zambian national team caught up with them in the number of titles. In 2015, the company of victors added to the national team of Namibia , which won the tournament for the first time. In the entire history of the tournament, teams that were not members of KOSAFA were invited 5 times - in 1997 the Tanzanian team took part in the tournament, in 2008 - the team of the Comoros , in 2015 - the team of Ghana and the team of Tanzania , in 2016 - the DR Congo team .
