Although Joash revered the prophet Elisha , whose death bitterly mourned, but in general he kept to the policies of Jeroboam and supported idolatry . His victory over the Jewish king Amasia , whom he took prisoner (4 Kings, chap. XIII, XIV and XVI), is known.
Joash freed himself from the yoke of Aram during Ben Hadad, the son of Hazael , and defeated Aram in three wars. Joash returned to Israel all the cities that Haziel took from his father Joachaz. After the Jewish king Amasias provoked him, Joash made a trip to the kingdom of Judea , defeated the army of Amasia near Beit Shemesh and captured him. Having taken Jerusalem , Joash took from it the treasures of the Temple , the royal treasury, prisoners and returned to his capital Samaria . Joash is mentioned in the inscriptions of the Assyrian king Adad-nirari III . It says that the king of Assyria approved the coronation of “Joash the Samaritan.”
