Feature
Pamir-Alai extends 900 km from west to east, 400 km from north to south. It consists of mountain ranges and highlands between the Ferghana Valley in the north and the upper reaches of the Amu Darya in the south. Pamir-Alai includes three dissimilar parts:
- Pamir ;
- Gissaro-Alai ;
- Tajik depression .
The northern ranges of the Pamir-Alai are Alai and Turkestan , which border the Ferghana Valley from the south. From the line of these ranges in the area of the Matchinsky mountain junction (over 5600 m in height), the Zeravshan ridge departs, which stretches west to the south of Zeravshan . These three ridges are characterized by serrated ridges, sharp peaks , and mountain-ice relief forms. From the high ridge of the Zeravshan ridge, a powerful Gissar ridge leaves from the southern side.
To the south of the Gissar Range, there is the Tajik Depression , in which there are many relatively low folded ridges stretching from the north-east to the south-west and south-south-west, in terms of slightly curved and convex to the north-west.
Pamir-Alai - the largest area of mountain glaciation : there are more than 10,600 glaciers on an area of 9820 km².
