The first mention of the city dates back to 1279 . In the city there is a Renaissance castle belonging to the Waldstein family, in the castle are the remains of the famous Thirty Years General Albrecht von Wallenstein .
There is a motorway Liberec - Prague passing by the city.
In 1866, one of the battles of the Austro-Prussian war took place near the city.
