Biography

Club career

At the age of 19, Chumpitas made his debut in the club of the 2nd division “Unidad Vesinal”. In 1964, he began to play for the team of the 1st division of Peru - Deportivo Municipal .

Since 1966, Chumpitas began to play for one of the most successful Peruvian clubs - Universitario . With this team, he won 5 champion titles in Peru (1966, 1967, 1969, 1971, 1974).

In 1972, Universario for the first time in the history of Peruvian football made it to the final of the Libertadores Cup , where it lost to the Argentinean Independiente 2-1 in the second final match (the match in Lima ended in a draw 0-0). Chumpitas was the captain of that Universario team.

In 1973, a match of stars between the teams of Europe and South America took place in Barcelona, Spain . Such great players as Johan Cruyff, Franz Beckenbauer, Teofilo Cubillas took part in it. Hector Chumpitas was elected captain of the South American national team, for which he received the nickname " Captain of America " ( Spanish El Capitán de America ). The match ended with a score of 4: 4, and in the penalty shoot-out series South America won with a score of 7: 6.

In 1975, Chumpitas left to play for the Mexican club Atlas from Guadalajara .

In 1977 he returned to the championship of Peru, this time to the Sporting Crystal club, with which he won the championship three more times (1979, 1980, 1983).

To this day, Chumpitas remains the best striker-defender in the history of the championship of Peru - he scored 65 goals in 456 matches [2] .

Peru Team

The first match for the national team of Peru Chumpitas held April 3, 1965 against the national team of Paraguay in Lima, the Peruvians lost with the score 0: 1.

At the World Cup, Chumpitas held his first match on June 2, 1970 against Bulgaria in Mexican Leon , in which the Peruvians won 3–2. The national team of Peru reached the quarter finals, as well as 8 years later, in Argentina. In both tournaments, Chumpitas wore a captain's armband.

In 1975, Chumpitas, as captain of the national team, led Peru to victory in the America's Cup. Only twice did the Peruvians become the best on the continent - in 1939 and in 1975.

After the Peru team made it to the 1982 World Cup, which was facilitated by Chumpitas himself, he announced the end of his performances for the national team.
