Although the film is positioned by the creators as popular science, a number of facts set forth in the film as scientifically proven are arguable in the opinion of experts, while others contain gross errors and are essentially pseudoscientific [2] [3] . Specialists also question the credibility of scientific consultants and the opinions of experts represented in the film.

Journalists of the Telepress Club, traditionally awarding prizes on the eve of the official TEFI award , gave the film an award for aggressive entertaining anti-science, along with other films, Meat ( NTV ) and Charles Darwin ( Russia ), are accused [4] [5] [6] .

Production

Work on the film lasted three years. The film crew worked in Moscow and New York ( USA ), Munich ( Germany ), London ( Great Britain ), Jerusalem and Tel Aviv ( Israel ), Paris ( France ) and Nevada (USA).

In the television version, part of the production scenes was reduced. However, it was stated that a DVD with a full version of "Mold" and additional video materials is planned.

The copyright holder of the movie Mold is Invistra LLC, which distributes aspergillus medications (in particular monarda oil ) through network marketing . According to L. Borusyak, the film as such is an advertising move of this company [2] .

Criticism

Along with scientific definitions, the authors involved clearly controversial facts, which received media feedback:

Luxurious, with installations, almost cosmic images, performed in the genre of scientific infotainment , voiced by the cunning voice of actor Bezrukov, “Mold” from the creators of the once sensational “Water” and “Food” was somewhat different from the water visual-television mantra in the quality of experts. Although all the relying costumed sensations - about the Crusades, which coincided with a massive infection with spores of malicious mold, about lepers of choice, about inhumane allies during the war, who didn’t share penicillin, and valiant Chekists, who then did not give a single penny of Soviet penicillin, are told according to the laws of docudrama, when historical stories successfully interspersed in a pseudoscientific narrative.

The film constantly mixes scientific facts and legends or conjectures. Due to the craving for high-profile statements, the authors of Mold actively use unproven theories and unconfirmed generalizations. An example is the assertion that all ( sic! ) Wars and revolutions were caused by the mass poisoning of people by ergot. The viewer also learns that bell ringing has the property of "bioresonance" and slows down the growth of pathogens. A visiting expert, MD, immunologist Pearl Laperla, states that tuberculosis, osteoporosis, bone disease and dementia are the results of pathology of Aspergillus fungi, and all diseases associated with blood stasis and cancer are pathologies of fungi from the Mucor genus. Such a discovery would deserve a Nobel Prize. <...> A considerable part of the time in the film takes a costumed production, depicting the fight against the plague epidemic in Moscow during the time of Catherine II. The fact that the plague is caused not by mold fungi, but by the bacteria Yersinia pestis , is not mentioned. It is also unclear why the authors added a story about leprosy to the mold film, caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae . Many viewers who have long since forgotten the basics of microbiology since school have an absolute confusion in their heads.
