Modern History
In 1949, the Gallipoli obelisk in Gelibolu was seriously damaged by an earthquake . For a long time he remained in a dilapidated state, and then was finally demolished. In the 50s and 60s, Gallipolis collected donations for the restoration of a destroyed monument on the site of the Society of Gallipolis in the Russian cemetery of Sainte-Genevieve-des-Bois near Paris in France. The monument with minor changes was a copy of the destroyed in Turkey [1] ..
In 2007-2009, the Center of National Glory (FTS) and the Andrew the First-Called Fund (FAP) implemented a major foreign project to restore the monument to the Russians who died in 1920-1921 during an involuntary stay of parts of the Russian army evacuated from the Crimea on the Gallipoli Peninsula . The restoration of this monument was another important step towards "healing the wounds of separation" inflicted on our people by the 1917 revolutions and the Civil War .
In the framework of this project, the famous monument was not just restored in Gelibolu, but a whole memorial complex was created, including an extensive fenced and equipped area, as well as the building of the Gallipoli Sitting Museum of History with a permanent photo exposure of the Russian army in Gallipoli from the collection of M. Blinova .. This is a heroic page in the annals of the White Army and the whole of Russian history, showing the world the power of the Russian spirit and national identity.
An official ceremony was held at the memorial complex to Russian soldiers with the participation of local residents. Wreaths at the monument were laid by V.I. Yakunin and Bishop of Geneva and Western Europe , Mikhail A.P., Chairman of the Union of Descendants of the Gallipolis Grigoriev, representatives of the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Turkey and the Turkish authorities. Then a memorial service was held for the Russians who died in Gallipoli and an inspection by the participants of the campaign of the memorial complex. The sea voyage in Sevastopol ended with the laying of wreaths at the memorial plaque on the Count's wharf in memory of compatriots forced to leave their homeland in November 1920 [2] .
