Health Risks

Used cosmetics may contain ingredients that can cause irritation of sensitive skin around the anus, leading to temporary discomfort, burning and even encopresis [1] .

Anus bleaching can be performed using creams containing hydroquinone , used to lighten the skin and usually included in products that are positioned as suitable for black people to even out skin tone [2] .

Hydroquinone is prohibited in some countries, including countries that are members of the European Union [3] .

In 2006, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration refused early claims about the safety of hydroquinone due to its association with ochronosis [4] , a syndrome in which the skin becomes colorless and disfigured forever, as well as the assumption of carcinogenicity of hydroquinone [5] [6] [7] . However, the use of hydroquinone is not prohibited in the United States so far [8] .

Other ingredients used to lighten the skin are arbutin and [9] . Arbutin can be converted by the body into hydroquinone [10] . Kojic acid was developed as a safer alternative to hydroquinone, but it is less effective for whitening the skin [11] .
