Biography

Lee Kerslake began playing drums at age 11 when he was in high school. His professional activity began at the age of 17: “One guy called me after he heard me in one semi-professional ensemble. It was the year 66th. ” [2] In an interview, he said that his main idol was always John Bonham , but the first role model was Buddy Rich . Kerslake always sang a little, but when asked whether he had ambitions to become a vocalist, he answered: “Only in the pub” [2] .

Lee Kerslake recalled his first bands with great warmth: Toe Fat , which gave him the opportunity to play with very different musicians music of different styles, and the National Head Band, a Liverpool ensemble performing a kind of medieval folk with rock elements (“A kind of hard rock music Lindisfarne variant ”) [2] . He rejected the first offer to enter Uriah Heep, but the second - in November 1971 - accepted, and, according to him, the decisive factor here was not Ken Hensley's identity (who officially made this offer), but communication with Mick Box.

Mick and I came to Jubilee Studios. It was November 23, 1971. I tuned the setup, it is my guitar and we started jamming. Somewhere around three and a half hours, we dropped the instruments and looked into each other's eyes: “What about beer? ..” Mick said that the group lacked a good drummer, and also a fifth voice for vocal harmonic structures. I turned out to be this missing link. [2]

The first album, in which Kerslake took part, Demons and Wizards , became a hit: it was followed by a no less successful The Magician's Birthday . These two records marked the beginning of the finest hour in the history of the group. As a member of Uriah Heep, Kerslake was involved in recording David Byron and Ken Hensley 's solo albums. About Byron he had a dual impression: “How powerful he was on the scene, how helpless outside it. There was some kind of vulnerability in it. But we worked 11 months a year! In the end, we all had enough of it, but he was the first ” [2] .

Kerslake left Uriah Heep in October 1979. According to him, the reason for the departure was a dispute with the management of a principled nature: “Before starting work on the next album, I suddenly realized that I was fed up with the manager Jerry Bron and Ken Hensley acting at the same time - pushing someone out of the line-up, pulling, trying to fill the entire kitchen " [2] .

In 1980, Kerslake became a member of the Ozzy Osbourne band and recorded two albums with her, Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman . On the cover of Diary of a Madman , however, there is no mention of the participation of Kerslake and Daisley; there are photos of Tommy Aldridge and Rudi Zarzo, who replaced them, who did not participate in the work on the album.

In 1998, Kerslake and Daisley demanded that Ozzy and Sharon Osbornov be paid fees in court, but in 2003 their claim was rejected [3] . Osborne subsequently replaced the rhythm section on these two albums, taking advantage of the services of Robert Trujillo and Mike Bordin.

In 1982, when Uriah Heep reunited, Kerslake re-joined the group, which he remained until early 2007, when it was announced on the group's website that he had left the team due to deteriorating health conditions. [four]
