The region takes its name from Lake Issyk-Kul (“warm lake” [1] ), the second largest salt lake in the world, which never freezes, despite its height in the Tien Shan mountains .

It is surrounded by Almaty oblast , Kazakhstan (north), Chui oblast (west), Naryn oblast (southwest) and Xinjiang , China (southeast).

Geography

Ala-Kul Lake in the Teskey Ala-Too Mountains

In the north, the eye-shaped lake Issyk-Kul is surrounded by ridges of the Tien Shan mountain system: the Küngöy Ala-Too mountains in the north and Teskey Ala-Too in the south (“sunny” and “shady” Ala-Too, respectively).

In the south are mountains and 'jailoo' (mountain meadows used for summer grazing). The highest peaks of the Tien Shan mountains , including Khan Tengri , are located in the easternmost part of the region.

Most of the region’s population lives around the lake, in particular, in the cities of Balykchi (at the western end of the lake) and Karakol (at its eastern end).

  • Import: US $ 221.7 million (2008) [5]
  • Foreign direct investment: 1.1 million US dollars (in 2008) [6]

Population

As of 2009, the Issyk-Kul region included 3 cities, 5 urban-type settlements and 175 villages. Its current and resident population, according to the 2009 census of the population and housing fund, was 425,116 people and 438,389 people, respectively.

National composition

After the mass emigration of the Russian-speaking population in the early 1990s, the ethnic composition of the region became much more homogeneous than in the neighboring Chui oblast, but it is still quite diverse, especially if we take into account the geographical concentration of various ethnic-speaking minorities.

Despite the fact that there is a general tendency to increase the share of Asian peoples and a decrease in European ones, most of the Russian and Russian-speaking population is now concentrated on the northern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul , as well as in the city of Karakol (formerly Przhevalsk ) and its environs.

According to the 2009 census, the ethnic composition (de jure population) of the Issyk-Kul region [7] :
