At Friday's training session, Ronnie Peterson had an accident, but was not injured and continued his performance. In the last minutes of qualification, François Sever flew off the track at high speed, crashed into a barrier and died on the spot. Upon learning of the tragedy, both other Tyrrell pilots Jackie Stewart and Chris Amon announced their termination of participation in the Grand Prix.
In the absence of rivals, the race turned into a performance of Ronnie Peterson , who won the pole, who led from start to finish and won. James Hunt , who finished second, set the Hesketh Racing team's new highest achievement, and bronze medalist Carlos Roiteman won the second podium of the season for Brabham . The enough points for the Lotus pilots were enough to ensure their team won the Cup of Designers.
