History

The first championships of the USSR are the competitions of combined cities, held in 1933-1936 and officially called the All-Union Volleyball Holidays.

Since 1938 , the title of USSR champions was disputed by club teams of the DSO and departments, with the exception of 1956 , 1959 , 1963 and 1967 , when the USSR championships were held in the program of the summer Spartakiad of the peoples of the USSR . In addition, in 1951 and 1952 , together with the club teams of Moscow , Leningrad , the RSFSR and the Ukrainian SSR , teams of other union republics participated, the USSR team and teams of the Detachment and Defense Ministry and departments participated in the 1976 USSR Championship .

The layout of the USSR championships has repeatedly changed. Until 1956, as well as in 1959, 1963 and 1967, competitions were held in one city. Since 1957 , competitions have been held according to the tour system, except in 1968 , when the two final laps were played on the road. The games were held in 1–4 laps; in the championships of 1949 and 1958 , an additional match was required to determine the winner.

In 1936 , 1940 and 1947 , the championship was held separately for teams of the 1st and 2nd groups, since 1954 - in classes "A" and "B". In 1966 , class “B” was abolished, and in class “A” the 1st and 2nd groups were formed, which since 1972 became known as the Premier League and the 1st group of class “A”, respectively. In 1974 , class “A” was abolished, since 1977 the 1st group became known as the 1st league.
