Scuderia Ferrari returned to the championship, exhibiting one car with Arturo Merzario at the wheel. March also returned, having lost the sponsorship of the American company STP, Ensign and Tecno , and the BRM team performed without injured Nicky Lauda . The first row of the starting field was occupied by two Lotus pilots led by Emerson Fittipaldi , followed by two McLaren pilots. Tyrrell pilots were only seventh and tenth.
The Brazilian lost the start to Ronnie Peterson and Denny Hume and rolled back to third place. Peter Revson hesitated at the start and Mike Halewood , who was driving around him, collided with Mike BΓΆttlerβs car , damaging the oil cooler to the latter. After six laps, another clash with the Ferrari Arturo Merzario pulled Francois Sever out of the fight. Danny Hume was forced to stop at the pit stop due to a malfunction in the ignition and Fittipaldi first came in second and then became the leader of the race, but six laps before the finish line he got down due to damage to the fuel line. The failure of the Brazilian took advantage of Ronnie Peterson, who won the race.
