"Melbourne Park" ( English Melbourne Park ) - a complex of sports facilities located in a park area of the city of Melbourne , Australia , on the banks of the Yarra River . On the territory of the complex there are tennis courts , swimming pools , an indoor multifunctional sports arena , which at various times was used as a basketball court , cycle track , skating rink . The biggest celebrity of the facilities of Melbourne Park are tennis courts, which from 1988 to the present has held one of the most popular international tennis tournaments - the Australian Open tennis . The most popular among the spectators of the tournament are the following courts:
- Rod Laver Arena - the main court of the tournament, which hosts the final fights. Built in 1988 , accommodates 16,820 spectators.
- Melbourne Arena - the second largest court, opened in 2000 , has a seating capacity of 10,500, and is sometimes used as a concert venue.
- Margaret Court Arena - court designed for 6,000 spectators, built in 1988 . Is the most capacious of the single-tier courts in the tournament. Named after Australian tennis player Margaret Court
Melbourne Park is part of the Melbourne Olympic Park , on the territory of which the Melbourne Cricket Ground stadium, designed for 100,000 spectators, the multi-purpose Olympic Park stadium, and other sports buildings and facilities, some of which were built for the Summer Olympics 1956
