A distinctive feature of Life to Lend is the almost complete absence of any political context and a concentration on the psychological component. The focus of the novel is the love of race driver Klerfe and the young woman Lilian, unfolding amid the world that has come to Europe. Lilian is sick with tuberculosis and every day is invaluable to her, but how many days did each of them end up with?
