Daejeon ( cor. 대전 [tɛ̝.dʑʌn] ) is a city of direct subordination in the center of South Korea , the administrative center of Chungcheongnam-do province . The official name of the city is the city-metropolis of Daejeon ( cor. 대전 광역시 Daejeon-gwanjoksi ). The fifth largest city in Korea with a population of 1,564 thousand inhabitants [1] . It is considered the scientific and technical capital of South Korea.

Geography
Geographical coordinates of the city: 36 ° 10 '~ 36 ° 29' s. w. 127 ° 14 '~ 127 ° 33' in. d.
Daejeon is located in the middle of South Korea, 167 kilometers from Seoul, 294 kilometers from Busan and 169 kilometers from Gwangju .
Climate
Daejeon has a humid monsoon climate . Winter is cool and sunny, its duration is about two months, summers are hot and rainy, its duration is five months.

History
Before the railway line passed through the city, it was a small town of Hanbat. In 1905 , a train station was built here on the railway route from Seoul to Busan , and the city began to grow rapidly. In 1932, the capital of the province of Chunnam was moved from Kongju to Daejeon. At the beginning of the Korean War, the city was the site of a major conflict: the Daejeon operation .

Transport
Train Station. The intersection of two expressways - Gyeongboo and Honam. The city is served by Cheongju International Airport .
There is a subway in Daejeon. Start of operation - 2006 .
Culture
In 1993, the city hosted an international exhibition ( World Exhibition Expo-1993 ). The EXPO Bridge was built for this event.
The city has a K-League soccer team Daejeon Citizen .
The Daejeon Museum of Art , located in Tongsan Park, is known for its exhibits combining technology and art. It was founded in 1998 .
Science
On March 1, 1959, the Atomic Energy Research Institute (AERI) was established in the city, which on February 17, 1973, after merging with the Radiological Research Institute (RRI) and the Radiation Research Institute in Agriculture (RRIA), was named Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). In 1990, the National Museum of Science and Technology of the Republic of Korea was opened in the city.
