Askiz ( hack. Askhys ) is a village , the administrative center of the Askiz district of the Republic of Khakassia of Russia . center of Askiz village council . It is one of the oldest settlements in the region.

Content
Village Name
The name of the settlement is a hydronym and comes from the name of the Askiz River.
Geographical position
The village is located 93 km south-west of Abakan on the highway 95K-002 Abakan - Ak-Dovurak. In the village, the latitudinal highway Askiz - Peak Peak originates, which in the future will connect Khakassia with the Kemerovo region . A ring road was built around the village.
Distance to the nearest railway stations Chertykovskaya and Askiz : 0.5 and 7 km, respectively. The closest stop is the Razdolnaya stop, at which the Abakan - Biskamzha electric train stops.
History
Askiz is one of the oldest settlements in Khakassia . The village became in the summer of 1771, when a wooden church was built at the mouth of Askiz River.
The population gradually grew and became the center of the Sagai Steppe Duma in 1858. In 1859, there were 40 yards, the population was 221 people.
In 1876 there was an involuntary mass baptism of 26 shamans and 3,003 Khakasses .
In 1918, the first collective farm was formed .
In 1958, the village of Askiz became a district center.
Before the formation of the Khakass district (1923), Askiz was the center of the Inorodniy district , the place of compact residence of the indigenous Khakass population.

Education and Culture
In Askiz there are two secondary schools, a vocational school, a library (founded in 1920), and the Museum of Local Lore. N. F. Katanova [8] , Peter and Paul Church of the Abakan Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church (founded in 1993).
