This stage took place on the updated highway, on which a new section of the tunnel appeared, a modified section near the swimming pool and a new turn, La Raskass. The starting field was expanded by two private teams using the March chassis: Hesketh Racing with James Hunt behind the wheel and LEC under David Perley . 26 riders took part in the stage, but on Saturday their number decreased: George Follmer was injured in a collision with Arturo Merzario and did not go to the start.
Jackie Stewart won the qualification, ahead of Ronnie Peterson by 0.2 seconds. At the start, they skipped ahead, starting from fourth place, FranΓ§ois Sever , but already in the second round, the Frenchman pierced the wheel and stopped at the pit stop, making way for Ronnie Peterson. In turn, in a Petersonβs car after several laps there were problems with fuel supply and the Swede was forced to give up leadership to Jackie Stewart, who did not miss the first place to the finish line. Debutant of βFormula 1β James Hunt could score points in his first race, but engine failure five laps to the finish threw him from sixth to ninth place.
