Story
Rosa Tyler , a young girl working in a London store, after closing, is surrounded by revived mannequins . She is saved by a strange person calling himself the Doctor [1] . The doctor blows up the store to destroy the transmitter, which controls the mannequins.
The next day, Rosa meets the Doctor on the doorstep of her home. She drags him into the house and demands an explanation for yesterday's events. The plastic hand left from the mannequin and brought home by Rosa comes to life and attacks them. The doctor neutralizes the hand and leaves, Rose goes with him and continues to demand an explanation. The doctor finally says that the mannequins are controlled by a control device and that the creatures from plastic want to overthrow and destroy the human race, after which they hide in a blue police booth and disappear with it.
Rosa talks about the Doctor to her boyfriend Mickey and finds a site dedicated to the Doctor. Together with Mickey, they go to the creator of the site - Clive. While Rosa is talking to Clive in the house, Mickey is kidnapped and replaced with a plastic copy. False Mickey leads Rose to a cafe and asks about the Doctor, but the Doctor appears at this moment, fights with a copy of Mickey and decapitates her.
With the help of Rosa, the Doctor finds a control center located in the technical room under the London eye and controlled by Nestin Consciousness . The doctor is trying to negotiate, but Nestin perceives his appearance as an attack and starts a war. Autons come to life and attack people. Rosa destroys Nestin with the “antiplastic” brought by the Doctor. Together with Mickey, who was saved from captivity, they leave the burning dungeon.
The doctor suggests that Rosa travel the universe with him. Rosa, worrying about her mother and Mickey, refuses. The doctor gives her a second chance and tells her that he can also travel in time . Rose is being decided. She says goodbye to Mickey and joyfully runs into the TARDIS door.
Additional Information
- At Rosa’s house, when the Doctor looks at himself in the mirror, he makes some comments about his appearance as if he is seeing himself for the first time - this may mean that the regeneration immediately after the events of the Doctor’s Day episode, when the Military Doctor began to regenerate in the Ninth occurred recently. Previously, the Doctor regenerated without companion witnesses only once, during the debut of John Sacrificial as the Third Doctor [2] .
Fictional Websites
Clive ’s website “Who is Doctor Who?” Exists and is being updated as if all the events of the series were actually taking place. A site published in the "real world" differs from the site in the series in background color and image . On the published site, under the Krakatau drawing, it says “Date and Place: 1880, Sumatra”, which contradicts the date of the present events, according to Clive, and the inscription on the figure itself. The following notes on the site indicate that Clive was killed by mannequins. Although his death was not shown on the screen, this was clearly implied.
A web site created by the BBC for UNIT indicates that the events of this series take place on the very day on which it aired - March 25, 2005 [3] . However, the poster in the episode Aliens in London (2005) claims that Rose disappeared on March 6th.
Production
Rosa was BBC Wales' in-house product for BBC One and was launched in Cardiff in July and August 2004. Starting from this episode, Doctor Who was to be shot for the first time in widescreen format and return to the 45-minute format for the first time since 1985. The BBC officially calls this episode "Series 1, Episode 1," indicating that the corporation has restarted the numbering of the series. However, some fans call this episode the first episode of Season 27 (Season 27, Episode 1) to reflect the story that preceded it. The episode was narrated by Anthony Williams [4] .
In the episode, we see that the action takes place in London at the Queens Arcade , where mannequins come to life, but in fact it is Cardiff . Most of the places in this episode are next to each other. The Henrika store is actually a branch of the Howells store, the pizzeria is La Fosse near the St. Davids Hall concert hall, and the street where Rosa joins the Doctor is the St. David Market.
When Consciousness Nestin discovers the TARDIS, and the Doctor confirms that it is his ship, Nestin's lips emit a few sounds that fans claim to mean “Evil Wolf” - a phrase that is the story arc of the first season. However, in the comments on the DVD version, Russell T. Davis said that Nestin pronounces the words “Time Lord”.
For the first time, the names of two actors (Eccleston and Piper) were shown before the title of the series in the opening credits. The name of Paul McGan appeared in the opening credits of the 1996 film , but after the title.
Music
Murray Gold’s new rendition of the main musical theme contains sounds and elements from the performance of the 1963 theme by Delia Derbiscaye and redone in 1980 by Peter Howell. The last Derbychaye theme was heard on television in 1983 in the closing credits of the special episode Five Doctors . An earlier version of Murray Gold can be heard in the official BBC trailer for the first season.
The music that plays when the Doctor finishes the story about the “rotation of the Earth” and goes to the TARDIS contains a distinctive female vocals. In the DVD commentary on this episode, Russell T. Davis and Phil Collinson jokingly call this voice “President Flavius,” referring to the Time Lady of Five Doctors. Davis says that this topic sounds “whenever it becomes too“ time lord ”” (from “Time Lord” - Time Lord). It can be heard during the first season (in The End of the World , The Bustling City , The Evil Wolf , and The Ways Separate ).
Most of the musical themes for this episode were released in December 2006 as part of the soundtrack. The vocal parts were sung by Melanie Pappenheim. The music, called “Doomsday” in the soundtrack, first sounds when Rosa first enters the TARDIS.
Cast
- In the closing credits, the role of Christopher Eccleston is listed as Doctor Who. For the first time, the actor playing the Doctor was named in the credits just like that in season 18.
- Actor Mark Benton, playing Clive, first appeared in the role of Ellis in the audio novel "Invaders from Mars" with Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor .
External links
- The beginning of the episode contains a lot of advertising: an ad on the bus advertises the musical The Lion King , a large video in Piccadilly Circus shows ads from Samsung , Coca-Cola , McDonald's and TDK .
- The doctor claims that he can feel the earth moving underfoot at a speed of 1000 miles per hour. Such a number is really possible, but only at the equator , for London another number will be correct - 650 miles per hour [5] .
- The title of the book, which, according to the Doctor, has a “sad ending” is “ The Lovely Bones ”. The melody he sings is a theme from the musical “ Guys and Dolls ”.
Show
New episodes of Doctors include Doctor Who: Confidential documentaries, which aired on BBC Three at 19:45, right after the episode of Doctor Who on BBC One. The first episode of the latest episodes uses trailers from the next episodes that have not been shown before.
According to unofficial estimates, the episode was watched by 9.9 million viewers - 43.2% of the television audience - during the evening. By the end, this number had grown to 10.5 million, thus increasing the audience to 44.3% percent (for comparison, the film Doctor Who, 1996 attracted 9.08 million viewers). In some regions, the first few minutes of the episode were spoiled by accidental interference with sound from Graham Norton. [6]
On March 8, 2005, Reuters announced that a copy of the first episode had leaked to the Internet and was being distributed via torrent trackers . The leaked episode did not contain opening credits to the new melody of Murray Gold. BBC employee responsible for the leak fired. [7]
