Kiel Bay ( German: Kieler Bucht , Dat. Kiel Bugt ) is a wide bay in the southwestern part of the Baltic Sea , bounded by the coast of the Jutland Peninsula, the island of Fehmarn and the islands of Denmark . The depth of the bay is 10–20 m, and significant fluctuations in the water level (up to 3.2 m) can occur, which are caused by a strong wind.

Geography
The southwestern coast of the bay and the island of Fehmarn in the southeast belong to Germany ( Schleswig-Holstein land), from the north the bay is bounded by the Danish skeletons of Lolland ( Zeeland region), Langelann , Erö and Als ( South Denmark region). Between these islands pass the Great Belt and Small Belt straits, through which the Kiel Bay is connected to the Kattegat Strait. In the east is the Strait of Fehmarn-Belt , leading to Mecklenburg Bay . On the south coast there is a large seaport - the city of Kiel , from where the Kiel Canal connecting the Baltic and North Sea leaves.
Along the southwestern coast of the bay, several bays are distinguished (from north to south):
- Gulf of Flensburg is a 50-km bay along which the border between Denmark and Germany passes. At the western end is the city of Flensburg .
- Schley - 42 km fjord , in its depths stands the city of Schleswig
- Eckernförder Bay - 16 km, in the western part - the city of Eckernförder
- Keeler Forde - 16 km bay, turned into the port of Kiel
