Biography

In September 649, Pope Martin I gathered the Lateran Council , at which condemnation of monothelitism took place, which at that time was officially supported by the Byzantine emperor Constant II and the Patriarch of Constantinople Paul II . In addition, an edict of faith issued by the emperor in 648 - Tipos (ΤύποΤύ τῆς πίστεως) was condemned.

To obstruct the cathedral, as well as to arrest and deliver Martin I to Constantinople , the emperor Constant II appointed Exarch Olympia and sent him to Rome .

Upon arrival in Rome, the Olympic saw on the spot a strong support from the army and the local population for the pope. Probably not feeding much hope for the execution of the order of the emperor, Olympian entered into an alliance with the pope and, like one of his predecessors, Exarch Eleftheria , in 650, proclaimed himself emperor .

For the next two years, Olympiad and Martin I conducted business management in Italy that was independent of Byzantium .

In 652, the Olympics launched a campaign against Sicily against the Arabs, in which he died.

Soon after, Theodore Calliope , reappointed by the emperor Constant II to rule the Exarchate of Ravenna, entered Rome with an army and sent Pope Martin I to Constantinople, where he was condemned and later exiled to Chersonesus Tauride .
