The village is located 5 kilometers east of the city of Semenov on the right bank of the Kerzhenets river.
It is one of the centers of the Old Believers .
There is an opinion that the name of the village comes from the formerly Meryansky settlement , in its place, due to the transformation of the name "Meryanovo".
Merinovo is considered the birthplace of the Semenov matryoshka .
