This article presents the details of the qualifying tournament for the 1990 World Cup in the European Continental Zone ( UEFA ) . An overview of the qualifying tournament is presented in the article World Cup Championship 1990 (qualifying tournament) .
33 UEFA countries applied for participation in the 1990 World Cup . The European Continental Zone received 14 (out of 24) tickets to the final tournament. 
Italy (the owner of the championship) received a ticket automatically, the remaining 13 places were played in the qualifying tournament between 32 countries.
32 countries were divided into 7 groups. The teams played each from each house and away. The number of countries and tours in groups differed:
- Groups 3, 5, 6 and 7 consisted of 5 countries each. The two best teams in each group received a ticket.
- Groups 1, 2 and 4 consisted of 4 countries. The winner of the group received a ticket. Two teams with the best results, who took second places in the groups also received permits.
