Man-made accident
July 10, 1976 there was a technological accident at the Icmesa plant of the Swiss company Hoffmann-La Roche . As a result of the accident, a deadly cloud of dioxin escaped into the atmosphere. Such an amount of dioxin is estimated to have killed 100 thousand people. A cloud hung over an industrial suburb, and then the poison began to settle on houses and gardens.
The plant continued to work for a week after the tragic accident until it was found that there was a serious environmental violation and the first symptoms of infection appeared in people - nausea began, vision was weak, eye disease developed, in which the outlines of objects seemed vague and unsteady . There were no mass cases of cancer in the region before, but after the accident, almost every second local resident was given this terrible diagnosis.
Five employees of the chemical plant were punished and sentenced to imprisonment in the first instance, which are on appeal, but were released on probation.
From 1981 to 1983, Icmesa paid more than 10 million euros in compensation to the affected families; further proceedings are still pending. Many years after the disaster, Seveso was a ghost town. Before the disaster in Seveso, there were 17 thousand inhabitants.
