Chris Amon returned to the race with a Tecno , while Arturo Merzario , who missed the Spanish Grand Prix, started again on the second Ferrari . Due to the replacement of the asphalt surface of the track immediately before the stage, the pilots had to start training before the Grand Prix on asphalt that had not yet hardened. This led to the fact that the coating began to deteriorate again in some places, which forced the organizers to restart work on the restoration of the roadway on the night from Friday to Saturday. The Association of Racers threatened to boycott the competition if the asphalt again collapses on Saturday, but there were no more problems with covering the track.
Ronnie Peterson won the qualification in the Lotus car, followed by Denny Hume and Jacques X. The first five places at the start were occupied by racers of five different teams. At the start, Peterson at first held the lead, but in the second round he was beaten by Francois Sever, who had broken out from fourth place. In the future, only Tyrrell and Lotus racers fought for the victory and Jackie Stewart and Francois Sever, who won a double victory, were successful. The McLaren and Ferrari pilots failed to wedge themselves into the battle for podium places - an oil pump flew in Jacques Ix's car, and Denny Hume was forced to stop at an additional pit stop after a turn.
