The 7th Asian Winter Games were held in the cities of Astana and Almaty ( Kazakhstan ) in January — February 2011 . Alma-Ata was selected in Kuwait on January 5, 2006 [2] , on October 29, 2007, part of the competition was moved from Alma-Ata to Astana. [3]
Content
Application
October 29, 2007 at the regular session of the Olympic Council of Asia, the request of the Republic of Kazakhstan was satisfied. Participants supported the expansion of the geography of the 2011 Asian Games.
In accordance with this decision, the opening ceremony of the games took place in Astana, and the closure in Almaty, in the Sports Palace named after Baluan Sholak [4] . The grand opening of the games took place on January 30 at the indoor football stadium in Astana. [5] In the capital, ice competitions were held - figure skating, men's hockey, speed skating and short track. "Snow" disciplines remain in Almaty - skiing, alpine skiing, ski jumping, biathlon, orienteering skiing. As well as ball hockey (bendy) and women's hockey. [3]
Funding and organization
The total cost of hosting the Asian Winter Games 2011 was $ 1.682 billion [6] . Of these, 1.4 billion dollars was spent on the construction / reconstruction of sports and other infrastructure involved in the games. The organization of the games spent $ 282 million.

Symbols
The symbol of the Asian Winter Games in Alma-Ata and Astana was approved by the little baby Irby. During the games themselves, statuettes of the young lady went on sale as souvenirs. The symbol flaunts on many advertising stands and sports equipment.
Fire Relay
On the eve of sporting events, for the first time in the history of the Asian Winter Games, a full-fledged Olympic Torch Relay [8] was held , which in 20 days passed through all regions of Kazakhstan with the participation of more than a thousand torchbearers. Especially for the relay, Yerulan Kanapyanov wrote the anthem of the torch relay. The author of the text is the songwriter Shomishbay Sariev . Role Rymbaeva and Alibek Dnishev [9] sang the anthem.
Infrastructure
Modernization of the airport "Almaty" completed by December 2008.
Commemorative Money
On January 17, 2011, the National Bank of Kazakhstan issued a commemorative silver coin in denomination of 500 tenge and a commemorative banknote of 2,000 tenge with a circulation of 20 million pieces, dedicated to the VII Asian Winter Games in Kazakhstan [10] . On the back of the bill are a skier on a background of mountains, Kazakh national patterns and symbols of the VII Asian Winter Games [11] .

Sports
For the first time in the history of the Asian Winter Games, ball hockey and ski orienteering competitions were held [12] [13] . Compared to previous Games , curling and snowboarding competitions were not held, ski jumping from the ski jump was returned to the program. The number of medal sets played by sports is shown in brackets.
