The first Ukrainian orienteer (and currently the only one) won the gold medal at the World Orienteering Championships . [four]

Biography

Born on September 6, 1971 in Chernivtsi. He graduated from Chernivtsi Secondary School No. 33 and the Faculty of Physical Education of the Lutsk Pedagogical Institute (now the Eastern European National University named after Lesia Ukrainka ).

He began to engage in sports in the third grade of school - he attended football, swimming, volleyball and judo sections. The elder brother Igor in 1983 attracted him to orienteering. The first mentors of Yuri were Ukrainian coaches Georgiy Bordiyan [5] and Yefim Shtempler [6] . Since 1988, he has been training under the direction of Denis Tischuk, Honored Coach of Ukraine in Athletics. [7]

Omelchenko's first serious successes in the national arena were victories at the 1988–1989 USSR Junior Championships. Since then, he has been a member of the national teams of the USSR, and then of Ukraine. The highest achievement of Yuri Omelchenko in track and field competitions is the “silver” of the winter championship of Ukraine at a distance of 3000 m (1995). He first distinguished himself in the international arena in 1994, becoming the silver medalist at the World Military Championship in Poland. A year later, the first among orienters of Eastern Europe became the world champion in competitions in Germany.

After this victory, Yuri Omelchenko moved to Sweden, where he combines training with the work of a physical education teacher. [8] Since 1996, he has been protecting the colors of the Orion Swedish club ( Karlskrona ). From the same year he began performing in the Park Orienteering World Cup, in which he now has all the records. At the 2012 World Championships in Germany in veteran in 2012, they won silver medals in the sprint and long distance (as the representative of Sweden).
