Biography

Born in 1945 in the city of Chernivtsi, where he lived and worked. He received a diploma in optics in 1971.

Vyacheslav Tarnovetsky, physicist , taught at the Department of Physics, Chernivtsi University . He took his first photos in 1960. Since then, I decided I worked only for myself, not thinking about exhibitions and publications.

I’ve been shooting with the ISKRA 6x6 camera since childhood. He led a free children's photo club in Chernivtsi. Participated in numerous photo exhibitions. They wrote about Vyacheslav Tarnovetsky that his photograph was spared from obsessive “literature”, it was “clean” and not artificial. This is a photograph that captures the harmony that exists in the surrounding world, where the pictures themselves are not formally similar, but in detail they are combined.

"I learned about Tarnovetsky in 1977, when I became an active member of the Novator photo club and began to go to the" Soviet Photo ".
There he met Mikhail Leontyev, who was the department of art photography of the magazine. We talked.
I said that from Chernivtsi. He told me: “There is such a guy - he sent us photographs. We printed them.
And after that - the national library in Paris announced that she wanted to take his photographs to the collection. ”
In "Soviet Photo" such photographs were not in the spirit of socialist realism. They wrote that "no, let us send you our
classics - Baltermants, Shaikhet. ” Those answered: "No, we want Tarnovetsky." They sent it to them. Then was the 77th year,
 and it all seemed fantastic.
He worked in series. Some were built in chronological order. Others - touched on some objects ...
He made series and laid them out in different folders. There are some houses there. There are pipes. However, all this was not literature.
He always emphasized this as a photographic event. And what is a photographic event according to Tarnovetsky?
This is an event that does not lie on the surface, but it is important for photography. That is, a photographic event
determines the state of the object inside the frame, the state of light, the state of the composition. And that’s all. This is an event
which is important for photography. "
   Boris Saveliev

He died on November 6, 2002 in the city of Chernivtsi.

  • Magazine FOTO-VIDEO N 2004 N 06 “ Boris Savelyev about Vyacheslav Tarnovetsky”
"z: In the 90s, I was at the Central House of Artists at a large exhibition where, in addition to yours, the works of other photographers were exhibited,
Vyacheslav Tarnovetsky. A few years ago he died, can you tell us a little about this author?
s: Tarnovetsky is an optical physicist by training, which he has been doing all his life, in parallel, or vice versa, he has been engaged in photography.
But existence within the framework of the Soviet state made possible absolute freedom - do what you want -
and absolute irresponsibility for what you do. This led him to engage in photography,
but he did not create, did not make the final result, that is, the existing photographs remained in the amount of 18 by 18 ...
I suspect that some kind of larger print and better quality was supposed. And so it’s all in
in limbo - it’s impossible to say what the author’s imprint is. He had a lot of diverse ideas,
touching around lying life. He is a typical analyst, and he has many findings, in this regard there was, but the question
The final work remains suspended in mid-air. You can print a book about him. "
