Story
The old billionaire Kate Blackwell, who owns a huge cross-border holding, recalls her family history at the end of the 19th century. Her father, a young Scottish entrepreneur Jamie MacGregor, went to South Africa hoping to make a fortune in diamond mining. Having grown rich, Jamie is going to get even with his longtime enemy, the Dutch merchant Solomon van der Merv, whose daughter became Kate's mother. Mrs. Blackwell recalls the deceased elder brother and the history of her marriage, the birth of her son and granddaughters - and, alas, along with the success of her ancestors (and her own), she is haunted by enormous disappointment in her descendants.
The fate of man is an interesting game, and in order to control it, one must become a true master of this game. Money and power, coupled with outstanding mental abilities can help to become such a master of the game. So all my life sincerely believed Kate. She believed that if someone, like her son or granddaughter, decided to act differently and not give a damn about the enormous opportunities that the mind, wealth and power give, then such people are weak and stupid and punished by the very fate for it. However, it seems from the outside that it was Kate herself who broke the fate of her closest people. The viewer will have to formulate his personal attitude to this ...
