Family
He was born in the village of Kurbatov of the Skopinsky district of the Ryazan province in a noble family belonging to the untitled branch of the Tolstoy noble family. Father - Guard Captain-Lieutenant Sergei Vasilievich Tolstoy (1767-1831), brother of the second wife of P.I. Fonvizin . Mother - Elena Petrovna (1774-1823), daughter of Prince P.P. Military Service
He began his service on August 29, 1823 as a non-commissioned officer of the Yekaterinoslav cuirassier regiment . From October 30, 1823 - cadet , transferred to the Moscow Infantry Regiment as lieutenant-commander on May 10, 1824 , from March 9, 1825 - ensign .

Joined the Southern Society in 1824 .

Hard labor
Convicted of the 7th category on July 10, 1826 . Sentenced to hard labor for 2 years. On August 22, 1826, the term of hard labor was reduced to 1 year. Sent to Siberia on February 10, 1827 . Arrived at Chitinsky prison on April 9, 1827. According to the tsar’s decree, he immediately turned to a settlement in the Tunkinsky fortress of the Irkutsk province (currently the village of Tunka , Tunkinsky district of Buryatia ). After the resignation, he lived in the Baranov estate of the Podolsky district of the Moscow province . He was buried at the church in the village of Peredelets (currently - within the city of Moscow ).
