Ikaria [1] ( Greek Ικαρία [2] ) is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea , in the Eastern Sporades archipelago. Sometimes it and the island of Samos are also ranked among the Southern Sporades archipelago. The population of 8,423 is the 2011 census. [3] The area is 255.32 square kilometers [2] . The highest point is 1040 meters above sea level [1] .

Description and Attractions
According to Greek mythology, the island got its name by the name of Icarus , who died due to his own disobedience near the nearby island of Samos . The waters around the island since ancient times have been called the Ikaria Sea [4] .
Ikaria is a small island with beautiful, diverse nature and magnificent beaches. One of the main attractions are caves, which are still not fully explored, and even not all locals know about their existence. In addition, Ikaria is famous for its healing mineral springs, which were discovered and used by the ancient Greeks.

Famous Natives
- Stefanos Papayannis (1908-1996) - Chief of General Staff of the Democratic Army of Greece during the Civil War in Greece (1946-1949).
- Aris Pulianos (born 1924) - an anthropologist and archaeologist, while in political exile, worked at the USSR Academy of Sciences and was a professor at Moscow University. His name became widely known in connection with a fossil man from the anthropological site Petralona Cave on the Halkidiki Peninsula.
