Sisian ( armenian Սիսիան ) is a city in Armenia , in the Syunik region , on the Sisian plain . Previously, it was part of the Sisian region of the Armenian SSR and was its administrative center .

Geography

Located on both banks of the Vorotan River ( Araks Basin). It is located at a distance of 6 km from the Yerevan - Meghri highway running north, 217 km from Yerevan and 115 km from Kapan .

5–6 km north of the city is the vast megalithic complex Karahundzh ( Zorats-Karer ), created 5000–7500 years ago.

The city is home to the ancient church of Sisavan ( VII century ), in the center of the city there is an archaeological and ethnographic museum of Sisian.
