Biography
He graduated from law school at the University of South California. In 1920, he began working in the film industry as an assistant to the director Tod Browning . Until the end of the decade, he perfected his skills at Hal Roach's studio. Hired by Roach in 1923, he first wrote gags for the series " Shoot ", then became a producer and director of short films. Roach first shot Laurel and Hardy in a duet, creating one of the most famous film comedy ensembles. In 1929 he became vice president of the studio.
In 1938 he received his first Oscar for best directing (The Terrible Truth ).
