Girl Tiffany, having lost her parents, must go to an orphanage . On the road at night, three robbers attack the carriage that carries her, who, having not found Tiffany's jewelry, lose interest in her. However, she tells the robbers that she is the daughter of an Indian Maharaja , who can pay a rich ransom for her, and then the robbers take her with them to the cave as a hostage . At first they are hostile to Tiffany, but after she paints the cave in bright colors and teaches them to read, the robbers become attached to her. A few days after the robbers having learned to read, they learn from Tiffany’s announcement that she is an orphan, the deception is revealed, and Tiffany leaves the cave and voluntarily goes to an orphanage.

In parallel with this, an action develops in an orphanage, which is visible from a telescope installed near the cave of robbers. Children in the shelter are forced to work constantly, collecting sugar beets , from which various sweets are then made. The owner of the shelter, which not only the children are afraid of, but even the policeman who follows all her orders, can eat these sweets as much as they like, while the children live half-starved and are dressed in rags. In the end, two boys, Nicholas and Gregory, run away from the shelter and find themselves at night in the forest of robbers, where they are met by Tiffany going to the shelter.

Together they return to the shelter, where Tiffany refuses to follow the orders of the hostess, rises to her room and finds cakes and pastries there. One after another, cakes fly to the hostess. When the mistress grabs her and carries her down for punishment, she is faced with the robbers who came for Tiffany. It turns out that the robbers are three brothers who once fled from the shelter to the forest. In the subsequent denouement, the mistress sees that they don’t love her, and she jumps into the boiling cream and turns into a cake, and the children and robbers redeem the orphanage from the state, paying for it with the property that the robbers have plundered for many years, and gradually turn it into a city.

• In the middle of the film, the bandits give Tiffany a piano and the ensemble play the Joplin entertainer ragtime .
• Ungerer is known not only as the author of children's illustrated books, but also for his cartoons, in particular, of erotic content. From the works for an adult audience, the film included rabbits and a red unicorn dabbling in a forest clearing (on one of Ungerer's posters a naked woman milks such a unicorn).
