Melbourne Zoo ( English Royal Melbourne Zoological Gardens, Melbourne Zoo ) - Australia's oldest zoo . It presents more than 320 species of animals from Australia and from around the world.
The zoo is located 4 km north of the center of Melbourne .
History
The zoo was founded in 1862 in the Royal Park, and covered an area of 22 hectares (55 acres). Earlier animals were kept in the botanical gardens of Melbourne.
Initially, the zoo was placed pets for acclimatization after their delivery to Australia. Since 1870, the zoo began to acquire monkeys, tigers, lions and other exotic animals.
One of the famous "residents" of the zoo was Queenie Queenie ( Eng. Queenie ), for 40 years katavshaya visitors. In 1945, she was trampled to death by the zookeeper, and 6 months after this incident, the elephant was shot dead. [one]
