Danilo Bartenev is mentioned in the 13th century in the Volyn annals [1] .

From the written letter of John III to his son, Prince Yuri Ioannovich, in possession of Dmitrov and Ruzoy in 1503, it is clear that at that time Demid Bortenev owned the village of Ovsyannikova, and Ryzhok and Ivan - the villages of Ivanovshchina and Shiripov. In 1669, twenty-one Bartenev owned inhabited estates.

The surname of the Bartenevs was divided into several branches, the connection between which is difficult to find:

  1. The first begins its lineage with Ivan-Chulok Bartenev who lived in the second half of the 16th century . His descendants served in the governors, nobles of Moscow and stolnik. Boris Ivanovich (Chulkov son), was a member of the Russian embassy in captivity in Poland, from where he was released under the Deulinsky Treaty of 1619. He was granted a fur coat and a goblet for captivity, was at the sovereign's table (not brought to Herbovnik).
  2. The second is from Eleutherius (Alferia) Bartenev, which is mentioned in the synod of John the Terrible . Ivan Artemyevich was bestowed for the Chigirinsky campaign by the estates in 1687, and Gavriil Artemyevich, for peace with Poland was granted estates in 1691. These Bartenevs served in solicitors, stolniki, then in the 18th century. some were in the military and civil service. In the XIX century, Theodosius Dmitrievich Bartenev was rear admiral and during the siege of Sevastopol - commandant of the northern fortifications. Vladimir Ivanovich Bartenev (b. 1834) was a senator. The second branch is included in the VI part of the genealogy books of the Kostroma and Moscow provinces (Coat of arms. Part III. No. 62).
  3. The third - from Semen Bartenev, who lived at the end of the XVI century. His grandson, Ivan Agapitovich, was a Galich landowner in 1646. One of the Bartenevs of this branch, Pyotr Ivanovich , was born. October 1, 1829 , was known as the compiler and publisher of the Russian Archive . The clan is included in the VI part of the Kostroma and Tambov provinces (Coat of arms. Part X. No. 80).
  4. The fourth branch originates from Fatyan Bartenev, who lived at the end of the 16th century (not included in Herbovnik).
  5. The genealogy of the fifth branch begins with Ivan Bartenev, who also lived at the end of the 16th century . Erofei Grigorievich was granted estates in Yelets district in 1650 (not included in Herbovnik).
  6. The sixth branch comes from Vasily Bartenev, who lived in the first half of the 17th century . Sylvester Vasilievich was granted estates in Kursk uezd in 1670, and his son Luke Silvestrovich was granted this estate in the patrimony in 1703. Many descendants of this kind were recorded in odnodvory (not entered in Herbovnik).
  7. The seventh branch - belongs to the Kostroma nobility and the youngest: it comes from Stepan Bartenev, who lived in the middle of the XVIII century (not included in Herbovnik).

When submitting documents in 1686, for introducing the genus into the Velvet Book , the Bartenev’s pedigree and two tsar’s letters were granted , the oldest was given to Matvey Stromilov Bartenev and dates back to 1501/03 [2] .
