The river (called Culueni) originates in the eastern part of the Mato Grosso plateau, then, passing a rapids on the Brazilian plateau , goes to the Amazon lowland. After merging with its main tributary (left) - the Iriri River , Shingu flows through the city of Altamira . Then the river bends east, near the city of Vitoria do Xingu, continues to flow north and, bypassing the city of Senador José Porfiriu , flows into the Amazon near the city of Porto di Mos . Here, the Shingu forms an estuary-type estuary, having a length of 160 km and a width of 8-12 km; the average water consumption is 16 thousand m³ / s.

Shingu feeds on rains, so the period of high water lasts from October to April - May. River navigation is 190 km from the confluence with the Amazon.

The river in the middle reaches is very rapids, the largest waterfall is called Cashueira Grandi . To use the hydropower potential of the river, it is planned to build several power plants on it.

Shingu is located in the rain forests of the Amazon . In the upper reaches, on both banks, there are , downstream the left bank is occupied by the moist forests of Tapajosa-Shingu , and the right bank is by the wet forests of Shingu-Tokantins-Araguai [1] .

In the upper reaches of the river is the Shingu National Park .

In the summer of 2011, a consortium of companies with the participation of the Brazilian government began construction of the world's fourth-largest hydroelectric power station, Belo Monte , on the Xingu River. The reservoir will cover an area of 450 square kilometers in the municipality of Altamira [2] [3] .
