Initially, Volendam served as a haven for the city of Edam located nearby. Later, however, Edam acquired his own harbor thanks to the canal dug up to Zuiderze . In this regard, Volendam became populated by farmers and fishermen. Currently, it is an international tourist attraction, acquainting tourists with the life of Dutch fishermen in the old days. In the port of Volendam there are many fishing vessels of various types. In the harbor, right from the ships, you can buy fish. The city held a fish auction. Sometimes residents of the city in traditional clothes wait in a prominent place for tourists, hoping that they will want to take a photo.
The village is the residence of the football club " Volendam ".
