Variety History
It is known that Luther Burbank bred its predecessor, 'Burbank potato', in Lunenburg , Massachusetts , USA , in the early 1870s. In 1875, Burbank sold the farm and the rights to this potato variety and moved to Santa Rosa (California).
Later, a descendant of this variety with red-brown skin called 'Russet Burbank' was bred.
The Russet Burbank variety was described by Luther Burbank in 1914 as a chimera selected by Lou Sweet from Burbank cultivars [1] . Lou Sweet raised potatoes in western Colorado and was president of the Potato Association of America in 1920 .
Currently, there are various cultivars of the variety 'Russet Burbank'.
They also approved for sale and cultivation in a number of countries varieties of GMO potatoes 'Russet Burbank', which have various modifications (resistance to insects and / or herbicides and viruses) produced by Monsanto and JR Simplot Co [3] .
Application and distribution
The variety is mainly used in the preparation of french fries, chips and chips in fast food restaurants.
When using a variety for the manufacture of potato chips , dark-colored chips are obtained due to caramelization of sugars , the content of which is higher than in the variety of potatoes 'Maris Piper', which is more often used in the production of chips.
Tubers of this variety have high antioxidant activity. [four]
In the 1970s, the variety was introduced in Australia, where it is the main variety for the preparation of fried potatoes [5] .
In North America, the variety grows well on irrigated soils (in the northwestern states of the USA - Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Montana, as well as in Canada). Productivity of non-GM variety is 28-67 t / ha. [one]
