Description
Slumdog Millionaire is the story of a young uneducated guy, Jamal Malik, an 18-year-old orphan from slums in Mumbai , who is just one step away from winning a TV game Kaun Banega Crorepati (local version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire TV game) in Hindi ) and a gain of 20 million rupees . During a break in the game, he is arrested by the police on suspicion of fraud.
Story
At the beginning of the film a question is asked:
Jamal Malik has to answer one question to win 20 million rupees. How did he do it?
A) he cheated
B) he was lucky
C) he is a genius
D) It is destined
The correct answer to this question will be revealed at the end of the film.
The film begins with a scene at the Mumbai police station, where Jamal Malik, a former resident of Asia’s largest slum area in Dharavi , is interrogated (tortured and beaten). Jamal participates in the Indian version of the TV program Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? ( Kaun Banega Crorepati ). He had only to answer one last question, which would bring him 20 million rupees , but the police arrested him on suspicion of fraud.
During interrogation by the police, Jamal tells the sad story of his life, each chapter of which surprisingly gave him answers to all the quiz show questions: how he gets the autograph of Bollywood star Amitabha Bachchan ; the death of his mother in one of the Hindu-Muslim clashes in slums; how he and his brother Salim became friends with the homeless girl Latika. By analogy with the book “ Three Musketeers ” studied in school (where she and her brother are very rare), Jamal calls Salim Athos , himself Porthos , and Latik the third musketeer , whose name he does not know.
Children live in a garbage dump. They are found by Maman, a pimp and compracicos (at the time of the meeting, the children do not know about it), who “shelters” orphans from the streets and teaches them to beg . Maman distinguishes Salim from the total mass of the children recruited from the street, appreciating for his tough character. He quickly elevates Salim to his henchman, and soon announces casting for his players, promising a prize for good performance. In the eyes of Salim, one of the contestants is forcibly blinded (blind singing beggars are served twice as much), after which he is asked to bring Jamal. But Salim is protecting his brother, and all three are trying to escape. Jamal and Salim manage to jump on a passing train. Salim extends her hand to Latik running behind the train, but at the last moment pulls a hand from her hands, and Jamal is lying that Latika herself decided to stay. Maman again takes her to her, so that (as Jamal later learns) to grow out of her a talented prostitute whose virginity will cost a lot.
The brothers are trying in every way to make ends meet: they travel on the roofs of trains, are engaged in petty trading, pretend to be guides from the Taj Mahal , trade in theft. But Jamal insists on returning to Mumbai, because he wants to find Latika. In the underpass, he meets a beggar, blinded by Maman, who tells him the address of the girl. When he finds her (she learns to dance in a brothel ), she and her brother try to save her, but Maman suddenly appears. Salim pulls out a revolver and kills him. Later he goes to Maman Javed’s competitor to get a job from him. When Salim returns, he tells his brother that Latika is now his property, and when Jamal protests, Salim threatens to kill him. But Latika herself intervenes in the conflict: she asks Jamal to voluntarily leave and thus breaks his heart, but, perhaps, saves lives.
Years later, Jamal works as a tea spreader in a call center . One of the operators asks to change it for a couple of minutes, during which time Jamal is trying to find Salim and Latik in the database. He contacts Salim, who now holds a high position in Javed’s organization and invites his brother to live in his house. Following Salim to Javed’s house, Jamal sees Latik there. Jamal pretends to be a new dishwasher called from an agency to be let inside. He tries to convince Latik to run away with him. Latika decisively refuses, but Jamal says that he will wait for her every evening at 5 o'clock at the train station of Chhatrapati Shivaji . One evening, Latika comes, but Salim and the people of Javed grab her and push her into the car, one of the bandits leaves a cut on the cheek of Latika.
Jamal loses touch with Latika when Javed moves to another house. To find her again, Jamal decides to take part in a TV quiz, as he is sure that Latika will definitely watch her. He answers all questions correctly, even after the leader delivers a wrong answer during the break. Jamal was left with one question, but then the time for the game expires. He is then arrested and taken to the police station to find out how a former slum dweller can know the answers to so many questions. When Jamal tells the story of his life about how, where and when he learned the answers to the quiz show questions, the inspector says that his story is “similar to the truth” and releases Jamal so that he can answer the last question.
In the house of Javed Latika watches the news, where they talk about the amazing success of Jamal. Salim gives Latike her car keys and her phone so she can escape. When Jamal chooses the “Call a Friend” hint and calls his brother, Latika answers instead. She says she does not know the answer to the last question, but believes that he is “destined.” The last question is: "What is the name of the third musketeer in the novel Dumas ?" . Jamal randomly chooses the correct answer ( Aramis ) and thus wins 20 million. Meanwhile, it turns out that Salim helped Latik escape. It is locked in the bathroom. When Javed rushes in, Salim shoots him, after which Javed’s subordinates kill Salim. His last words are: “God is just” (in the Russian dub “the Lord is great”).
Later that evening, Jamal and Latika meet at the train station.
In the final, the answer to the question at the beginning of the film becomes known: D) It is destined

The fate of the actors
The child actors who performed the roles of Salim and Latika in childhood, as well as their characters in the film, lived in the poorest quarter of Mumbai. Upon returning to India, hundreds of compatriots met them as national heroes - with garlands of fresh flowers, sang songs and carried on their hands [6] . After the resounding success of the film in Hollywood, the Government of India promised to donate apartments to the families of the children-actors in the city center, but the children returned to Mumbai slums [7] [8] . True, Azhzharudin later received an apartment of 18 m², where he moved with his family.
The British tabloid, News of the World, as part of its investigation into the exploitation of children in Mumbai, sent “intermediaries” to the father of Rubins Ali, a girl who played the role of Latika in childhood. Papa Rafiq and uncle Rubins Rajan entered into negotiations on the sale of a girl to the family of the "eastern sheik", asking for her £ 200,000. Father Rubins explained the desire to sell his daughter to the disastrous financial situation of the family, which, according to him, “did not receive anything for participating in the film” [9] [10] .
The fees of the three actors who played the main characters in childhood were placed in trust funds that would give money to the actors at the end of high school and attaining the age of sixteen. [eleven]

Differences of film from book
- In the film, the main character is tortured and interrogated by an ordinary policeman, and he tells his story to the inspector. In the book, the inspector himself tortures him personally, and he tells the story of his life to a woman lawyer whom he once saved from his father's harassment.
- In the book, the name of the protagonist is Rama Mohammed Thomas, not Jamal. Since the parents of the hero are unknown and no one wanted to arrange disputes on religious grounds, in the church where they threw the main character, they give him a triple name satisfying Christians, Hindus and Muslims.
- In the film, the protagonist and Salim are siblings and grow up together, in the book they are comrades in misfortune and meet by chance in an orphanage. The book Salim is very different from Salim in the film: unlike the cruel and unprincipled Salim in the film, in the book Salim is very kind, docile, and dreams of becoming an actor.
- In the film, the protagonist experiences the death of a mother in front of his eyes. In the book, he never knew his mother.
- There is no character of Latika in the book at all, but the prostitute with whom the main character falls in love served as a prototype for Latika in the film.
- Many episodes were not included in the film, including the work of the main character by the Australian ambassador, the movie star Nelima Kumari, and life in the Agri Chowl.
- In the film, the main character wins 20 million rupees, not billion. The transfer in the book is only made on the model “Who wants to be a millionaire?”, And in the film the player takes part in the show “Who wants to be a millionaire?”.
Facts
- In the cinema game “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” There are 10 questions, in the real version of the game in Hindi there are 15 of them. In addition, the film does not contain fireproof amounts and the questions are not distributed according to the degree of difficulty, which the moderator on the last question ironically tells.
- The actor with whom Jamal takes autographs is Amitabh Bachchan , a very famous and popular Indian actor who was the first leading Indian version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire." The real Bachchan refused to play himself, and in the film he plays an understudy.
- Initially, the film was supposed to get a PG-13 rating . When the picture was rated R, the creators had neither the time nor the means to challenge the decision of the MPAA, so the film came out on screens with a rating of R. However, in Russia the film came out on screens with a category of 12+ .
- In 2001, the major of the British Armed Forces, Charles Ingram, won a million pounds. But the show did not go on the air, and Charles, his wife Diane, and accomplice of Tekven Uittok were found guilty of a criminal conspiracy. Looking through the footage, the editors paid attention to the coughing that came from the audience before the player gave another answer [12] . The scandal with the English major inspired the writer from India Vikas Swarup to compose the novel “Question - Answer”. And in the future director Danny Boyle shot based on the novel film "Slumdog Millionaire."
- Dev Patel was found on the role by chance, after a suitable actor could not be found in densely populated India. Patel recommended the daughter of Danny Boyle, who saw him in the British television series " Suckers ".
- The host of the program in Russian translation is voiced by Dmitry Dibrov , the host of the Russian version of this show.
