Creation History
The documentary was shot on the basis of Madonna’s Re-Invention World Tour , during which she visited North America and Europe from May 24 to September 14, 2004. The director of the film was Yunas Okerlund , whose previous work included music videos , commercials, and the film Aerobatics . The picture can be seen as a continuation of the film “Truth or Dare,” also known as “ In Bed with Madonna, ” released fourteen years earlier in 1991. In both tapes, the singer’s backstage life was shot in black and white, while live performances were shot in color. The non-commercial premiere of the film took place on MTV on October 21, 2005 in the USA [3] , which did not go on public sale until June 20, 2006. Initially, the picture was called The Re-Invented Process [3] with a reference to the name of the tour on the basis of which it was shot, as well as cooperation with Stephen Klein and the X-STaTIC PRO = CeSS exhibition . Images from the exhibition were used in the opening credits of the film.
Documentary
The documentary begins with events that took place before the start of the tour, such as the selection of dancers, rehearsals and the premiere, and continues to narrate the life of Madonna until the end of the tour. The film also demonstrates life after the tour, namely a visit to the Madonna of Israel at the end of 2004.
The film received mixed reviews from critics. In particular, Barry Walters from Rolling Stone magazine noted that in the film “there isn’t that seductive charm of the diva that was in “ Truth or Dare ” . Instead, the more earthly Madonna is struggling to become more sincere and less confident in the frame ” [4] . Catherine Flett of The Observer newspaper notes how striking it is to observe that emotional facet in Madonna’s character that separates her “working days as head of Madonna Inc.” and “those tiny glimpses of revelation in a relationship with Guy Ritchie in which sometimes she manifests herself so girlish and a little insecure, as happens with all of us ” [5] . The film was released in CD + DVD format and contained a live album and a documentary. The release took place on June 20, 2006 by Warner Bros. Records and Warner Music Vision . In Russia, the film was shown on the First Channel of Television on August 16, 2008, on the day of the 50th anniversary of the singer [6] .
