The web service is based on the Git version control system and is developed on Ruby on Rails [8] and Erlang by GitHub, Inc. (formerly Logical Awesome) [9] . The service is free for open source projects and (from 2019) small private projects, providing them with all the features (including SSL [10] ), and for various large corporate projects various paid tariff plans are offered [11] .

The slogan of the service - “Social Coding” - can be translated into Russian as “Writing code together.” T-shirts are printed on a completely different phrase: “Fork you!” (“Send off!”) [12] . On the one hand, it is consonant with the English-language curse and hints at the informal atmosphere. On the other hand, these words remind you that creating new forks with Git is easy and painless - traditionally, developers of open source projects have a negative attitude to creating branches [13] - and is also consonant with the name of one of the GitHub features - the forks queue [14] .

GitHub talisman selected octopus ( English octocat ), which, contrary to common misconception, is not related to the short film “Octocat Adventure”, but was simply found by Tom Preston-Werner on the service iStock [15] .

On June 4, 2018, Microsoft bought GitHub for $ 7.5 billion [16] [17] [18] .

Opportunities

The creators of the site called GitHub " social network for developers."

In addition to placing the code, participants can communicate, comment on each other's edits, as well as follow the news of friends.

Using the power of Git, programmers can merge their repositories - GitHub offers a convenient interface for this and can display the contributions of each participant in a tree .

For projects there are personal pages, small wikis and an error tracking system .

Directly on the site, you can view project files with syntax highlighting for most programming languages .

  • You can create private repositories that will be visible only to you and your chosen people.

Previously, the ability to create private repositories was paid.

  • It is possible to directly add new files to your repository via the service’s web interface [19] .
  • The project code can not only be copied via Git , but also downloaded as regular archives from the site.
  • In addition to Git , the service supports getting and editing code via SVN [20] [21] and Mercurial [22] .
  • The site has pastebin -service gist.github.com for quick publication of code snippets.

Previously, Ruby projects could be automatically published in the RubyGems service repositories, but in October 2009 GitHub abandoned this service [23] .

Popularity

The first private repository was created on January 12, 2008 . By the end of 2011, more than a million users [24] and over two million repositories [25] were already registered in the project. As of March 2017, there were over 58 million repositories on the site. [26]

At the end of 2008, GitHub received the award as the “Best Startup Debut” [27] .

The source code for the Linux kernel is located on Github. [28]
