At this point, the new Shadow team debuted with Jackie Oliver and George Fallmer at the wheel. The McLaren team put out a new M23 car, which was provided by Denny Hulm (the other two McLaren pilots, Revson and Schecter, started on the old M19C model). Andrea de Adamik returned to Surtees, and Nanni Galli crashed on sports car tests and was replaced by local racer Jackie Pretorius . Also local drivers Dave Charlton and Eddie Casan took part in the Grand Prix.

The new model “McLaren” has already proved itself in qualifying, allowing Danny Hulm to win the pole position. New Zealander won the start and left the race leader, and behind the brilliant breakthrough Dave Charlton made a breakthrough from 13th place to seventh. He also became the culprit of a major accident on the third lap, when he lost control and rammed Mike Heilwood's car . Clay Regazzoni and Jacqui X both crashed into the Britons' unfolded from the blow of the Surtees hit. From a blow, Regazzoni lost consciousness, his car caught fire and Heilwood had to pull the Swiss out of a burning car. Regazzoni was sent to the hospital, but, fortunately, received only minor burns.

This accident cost leadership to Hulme, who drove onto the wreckage of cars, punctured the wheel and was forced to pick up tires. The leaders came Jody Scheckter (the first laps in the lead in the career of a South African), who was ahead of Jackie Stewart after two laps. The Scotsman was the first throughout the rest of the distance and won. Schecter held on for a long time second, but engine breakdown four laps from the finish line threw him to ninth place.
