At first he studied composition and learned to play the piano with Yaroslav Kvapil. Then he studied in Brno with Zdenek Halabaly and Antonin Balatka, and then in Prague with Vitezslav Novak . From 1936 he worked as an assistant at the Brno Opera, then from 1939 he was the chief conductor of the Ostrava Opera. In 1948 he returned to Brno, first as an assistant conductor, and in 1952 - 1978 . as the chief conductor of the opera house . In 1978 - 1983 led the Philharmonic Orchestra of Brno . During his career, Jilek often directed the orchestra of the National Theater in Prague , the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra , as well as orchestras abroad.
Yilek's work was mainly devoted to the legacy of Leos Janacek . He staged his operas (including, repeatedly, all together within the framework of one festival), performed his orchestral compositions, and prepared for publication various works by the composer.
