History
Appeared during the First World War , received the greatest development during the Second World War . The size and driving characteristics of submarine hunters could vary widely, their armament consisted of depth charges and small - caliber guns . In the postwar period, the improvement of submarines required an increase in the size of ships capable of carrying the necessary equipment and weapons to effectively combat them, and therefore the construction of submarine hunters was discontinued.
Unmanned vessels
In connection with the development of technology, in the XXI century the idea of a submarine hunter was revived in the form of an unmanned vessel capable of long-term autonomous or remotely controlled cruising in a given sea area or escorting ships, searching, detecting and tracking submarines, including low-noise ones diesel-electric , transferring the coordinates of detected boats to the coast guard , anti-submarine ships or anti-submarine aircraft . Since 2010, such a project has been developed by the United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency ( DARPA ) as part of the ACTUV program. [one]
On April 9, 2016, the US Navy announced the launch of an experimental unmanned trimaran "Sea Hunter" , 40 m long, with a displacement of 135 tons, equipped with a diesel engine. The body is made of a lightweight non-magnetic carbon composite . The vessel does not carry weapons, only hydrophone , sonar and magnetometric systems for detecting submarines, and, as expected, will be able to reach speeds of up to 27 knots, be completely autonomous for two or three months. It is proposed to use such vessels as an autonomous coast guard patrol or as part of anti-submarine defense of an aircraft carrier formation. [one]
