History
During the era of the great geographical discoveries, Spain, along with Portugal , actively equipped sea expeditions to distant shores. The king of Spain financed the expedition of Magellan (aware of Spain’s efforts to find a western route to India, Magellan proposed his plan to the Spanish king): on August 10, 1519, a fleet of five ships left Seville, the purpose of which was to reach the Moluccas, heading west, which allowed to expand the Spanish economic zone and sphere of influence. This trip around the world gave Spain the most important knowledge about the world and the oceans, which later helped in the exploration and colonization of the Philippines. The Spanish conquistadors actively colonized America ; after the king’s authority was established in the American territories, the Spaniards concentrated on the extraction and export of gold and silver, exporting tons of gold and jewelry for their king on their galleons .
In May-September 1588 the campaign of the Invincible Armada - a large navy (about 130 ships), assembled by Spain in 1586-1588. for the invasion of England during the Anglo-Spanish War (1585−1604), ended in crushing failure.
In 1796, Spain came out, at the request of revolutionary France , against England. The sheer backlog of the Spanish army and navy led to a series of defeats. Despite this, Spain remained in alliance with Napoleonic France, until the remains of the Spanish fleet were destroyed at Trafalgar , October 20, 1805.
