Biography
Yousef Saanei was born in Nikabad ( Iran ) in 1937, in a family of Shiite theologians. In 1946, Saanei was enrolled in Isfahan Seminary , and in 1951 he entered Qom to continue his studies. For his zeal and exemplary diligence, one of the largest Shiite religious leaders of that time - the great Ayatollah Borujerdi - awarded him with a special recommendation. From 1955 to 1963, i.e. while Ayatollah Khomeini was in exile , Saanei attended his Harjid classes and was one of his closest students. He attained the rank of Ijtihad at the age of 22, and since 38 years has been teaching Islamic sciences at the Kharij level.
Ayatollah Saanei is one of the prominent Muslim reformers, and gained fame for his views on the equality of people regardless of gender, nation or religion.
