The population of the district was 93,400 people [1] . The largest city in the region was Newry .
In 2011, it was planned to combine the district with the Down district [2] , but in June 2010 the Cabinet of Ministers of Northern Ireland announced that it could not agree with the reform of local self-government, and the existing system of districts would remain the same for the foreseeable future [3] [4] .
Since April 1, 2015, it has been merged with the Down area to the Newry area , Morne and Down [5] [6] .
