König, Renee

Mother is French, the family constantly traveled to Europe ( Italy , France , Spain ). He studied at the gymnasiums of Halle and Danzig ( Gdansk ), at the universities of Vienna and Berlin (philosophy, psychology, oriental languages, art history, ethnology, humanities). He defended his thesis on the aesthetics of naturalism in France ( 1930 ). Not accepting Nazism , in 1937 he emigrated to Switzerland. Private Associate Professor in Zurich ( 1938 - 1947 ). Since 1949 - professor of sociology at the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences of the University of Cologne, in 1955 - 1974 he headed the Institute of Sociological Research at the University of Cologne. As a visiting professor, he lectured at the University of Michigan and Columbia , the University of California , the University of Colorado , the University of Arizona , Kabul University, and College de France . In 1962 - 1966 - President of the International Sociological Association . Since 1974 , after his resignation, an honorary professor at the University of Cologne, worked a lot in the United States as a teacher and ethnologist.

He developed the theoretical ideas of F. Tönnis , was influenced by French sociology ( E. Durkheim , M. Halbwax , M. Moss ). König's scientific interests include sociology of the family , sociology of youth , the sociology of art and fashion , the history of sociology , and ethnology . He supported the development of sociology as an empirical science. He is one of the founders of the Cologne School of Sociology, from 1955 to 1985 , after L. von Wiese, he was the chief editor of the authoritative Cologne Journal of Sociology and Social Psychology .

Author of essays, travel notes, autobiographical works. He translated the works of Giovanni Vergi , a biography of Oscar Wilde .
