In 1924 he became the Olympic champion in triathlon as part of the Netherlands national team, in individual competitions he became the fourth. In 1928, he made a gold double in his homeland, winning gold in the individual and team championships of triathletes. In 1932, in Los Angeles, he was again the strongest triathlete in the individual championship. The 1936 Games in Berlin were held for the athlete without winning medals. Until 2004, Payou de Mortange remained the Dutch champion in the number of Olympic medals won.
Pail de Mortange was a professional military man, during the Second World War he participated in hostilities in the Netherlands, Belgium and France, and was awarded military awards. Then he continued his army service and retired in 1967 with the rank of brigadier general.
